Where the selected workflow supports it, CastReader keeps the source visible, highlights the current text, auto-scrolls, resumes progress, or explains difficult passages.

CastReader has two related jobs:

1. Read Aloud converts supported text into speech and keeps the listening experience connected to the source.
2. Read & Explain helps a reader understand difficult or foreign-language passages without replacing the original text.

Read & Explain is CastReader's distinct understanding workflow. It keeps the original passage visible and explains it in a language the reader understands. This differs from literal translation, which normally replaces the source with translated text.

## Accounts, Pro, and cross-device behavior

CastReader is free to start with daily allowances. Free playback speed is available up to and including 1.25×; speeds above 1.25× require Pro, which supports playback up to 3×. CastReader Pro is tied to a login email and provides higher usage limits and additional voice and explanation access. Every signed-in Free and Pro member can create multiple private voices and play each server-set fixed preview; Free cannot apply those voices to arbitrary text, Read Aloud, or Explain. Pro, including trialing accounts, can use an owned or explicitly authorized voice in Read Aloud and Explain for 120 minutes (7,200 seconds) per membership-month allowance window. Creation, deletion, and fixed previews do not consume that application allowance. Only successful generated-audio duration counts; failures, cancellation, timeouts, quality rejection, idempotent retries, and cached replay do not create duplicate usage. The public flow accepts direct microphone recording only, not existing audio-file uploads. Global and China users, sign-ins, accounts, databases, storage, and compute are fully isolated and do not sync. ## Voice and language facts

CastReader supports 9 read-aloud languages: English, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, and Hindi. The live `tts-voice-catalog-v1` catalog exposes language, locale, accent, gender presentation, tier, quality status, recommendation, description, use cases, avatar, and sample metadata. Voice inventory is dynamic, so the in-product picker and live `/voices` page are the current sources of truth rather than a hard-coded count.

German is supported across the browser-extension workflow: `de-DE` content detection, selectable German voices, word-level timestamp handling, synchronized highlighting, auto-scroll, German Kindle OCR, and a German interface. Emilia (`df_mls_19`) is the free German default, while Pro provides a growing collection of additional German voices. The German voice collection remains monitored Beta while quality feedback continues.
