Read Adobe Acrobat Aloud — Professional TTS for Every PDF

Acrobat ships with Read Out Loud, but it speaks in legacy system voices, reads page by page, and never shows you where it is. CastReader for Mac replaces it with natural AI voices and word-level highlighting on the real Acrobat window: select any clause, press play, and listen. Native Accessibility path — no Screen Recording permission.

Why CastReader Beats Acrobat's Built-In Read Out Loud

Three things Read Out Loud can't do — and the workflows they unlock

Word-Level Highlight on the Real Acrobat Window

A transparent overlay tracks each spoken word on the actual PDF — not a clone pane or a sidebar — pixel-aligned through macOS Accessibility. Read Out Loud gives you no visual anchor at all.

Natural Voices, Not System Defaults

Read Out Loud borrows whatever legacy voices macOS offers. CastReader brings natural AI voices in 40+ languages — English, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and more — narration you can actually listen to for an hour.

Variable Speed, Click to Jump

1.5× to triage a long report, 0.9× for careful contract review. Click any word to resume from exactly there — Acrobat's built-in reader can only stop and start over.

Built for Contracts and Filings

Master services agreements, vendor contracts, 10-Ks, GDPR assessments, audit reports — listening clause by clause surfaces the asymmetric terms and buried obligations that speed-reading misses.

Research and Whitepapers Without the Slog

Analyst reports, standards documents, technical whitepapers — an hour of skimming becomes thirty focused minutes at 1.25×. Or proof-listen your own report and catch the phrasing your eyes auto-correct.

Reader, Pro and Signed PDFs — All Safe

Works with free Acrobat Reader and paid Acrobat Pro alike. CastReader only reads text — it never modifies the PDF, so signatures, form fields and security features stay intact.

Free to Start, No Account

Standard voices are free with no signup, no license key, no per-seat fee. CastReader Pro adds premium ultra-realistic voices and more listening hours whenever you want the upgrade.

How to Make Acrobat Read Aloud on Mac

  1. 1

    Install CastReader for Mac

Download the .dmg and grant Accessibility permission once. No Screen Recording permission is needed — Acrobat exposes its PDF text through the native macOS Accessibility API, the same way Preview does.

  2. 2

Select the text you want to hear

Open any PDF in Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Pro and drag-select a clause, a section, or the whole executive summary.

  3. 3

    Press the floating ▶

A play button appears next to your selection. One click — the audio starts, and the highlight glides word by word inside the actual Acrobat window.

  4. 4

    Steer with speed and clicks

Speed up to skim, slow down for dense clauses, and click any word to resume from that exact spot.

Acrobat's Read Out Loud vs. a Voice You Can Work With

Adobe Acrobat does include a built-in screen reading feature: View → Read Out Loud. It speaks the current page — or reads to the end of the document — in your operating system's stock TTS voices. For occasional accessibility use it's genuinely better than nothing. But anyone who makes it a daily workflow hits the same three walls: the voices sound dated, it marches page by page with no indication of where it is on screen, and it can't resume mid-paragraph — if you stop, you start over.

CastReader takes a different path. It's a native macOS app that reads the text Acrobat already exposes through the system Accessibility API — the same mechanism Preview uses — so there's no screen capture and no OCR pass for normal text PDFs. Select exactly what you want to hear, press the floating play button, and a word-level highlight glides across the real Acrobat window while a natural AI voice reads. The voice matches the document's language across 40+ supported languages, and mixed-language files switch voices at sentence boundaries.

Scanned documents are the one case that needs preparation. Many contracts and forms arrive as scans — image-only PDFs with no text layer — and no reader, built-in or otherwise, can speak text that isn't there. The fix lives inside Acrobat: run Recognize Text (Tools → Scan & OCR) to add a text layer. Once it exists, CastReader reads the recognized text like any other PDF: select, press play, follow the highlight.

The payoff shows up in long-document work. A thirty-page master services agreement at 1× speed forces clause-by-clause attention; a dense whitepaper at 1.25× turns an hour of grinding into a focused half hour; proof-listening your own quarterly report catches the awkward phrasing your eyes silently fix. Because CastReader only reads, digitally signed PDFs, locked forms and certified documents stay exactly as they were.

Getting started is free: standard voices with no account or license key, and teams can push the .dmg to every Mac through MDM like any other app. CastReader Pro adds premium ultra-realistic voices and more listening hours. Your documents stay private — only the text you select is sent to generate audio, and document content is never stored.

Common Questions

Everything about reading Adobe Acrobat aloud on Mac

How do I read Adobe Acrobat text aloud on Mac?

Install CastReader for Mac (.dmg), grant Accessibility permission, open any PDF in Acrobat Reader, drag-select a paragraph, then click the floating ▶. A natural AI voice reads while word-level highlight tracks on your real Acrobat window.

Doesn't Acrobat have Read Out Loud already?

Yes — View → Read Out Loud. It uses your system's legacy TTS voices, reads page by page, shows no highlight, and can't resume mid-paragraph. CastReader adds natural AI voices, word-level highlight on the real Acrobat window, variable speed, and click-to-jump.

Acrobat's Read Out Loud isn't working — will this help?

Usually, yes. CastReader doesn't depend on Acrobat's Read Out Loud pipeline at all — it reads through macOS Accessibility — so it's a common workaround when the built-in feature is silent or greyed out. For fixing Read Out Loud itself, see our troubleshooting guide.

Does Acrobat need Screen Recording permission?

No. Acrobat exposes its PDF text through macOS Accessibility APIs, so CastReader needs only the Accessibility permission — no screen capture involved.

Will it work on scanned contracts and forms?

If a text layer exists, yes. Run Acrobat's OCR first (Tools → Scan & OCR → Recognize Text); once the text is recognized, CastReader reads it like any other PDF. Image-only PDFs can't be read by any TTS until OCR is applied.

Is this for Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Pro?

Both. CastReader works with free Acrobat Reader and paid Acrobat Pro. Any text Acrobat can select, CastReader can read.

Does it work with digitally signed PDFs?

Yes. CastReader only reads text — it doesn't modify the PDF. Signatures, form fields, certification and security features remain intact.

Can I change the speed or jump around?

Yes — 1.5× for triage, 0.9× for careful contract review — and click any word to resume from there, which Acrobat's built-in Read Out Loud cannot do.

Can I keep listening on my phone?

Yes. Send the audio to your phone and continue in the CastReader iOS or Android app from the same spot — handy when a contract outlasts your desk time.

Can I listen to Chinese or Japanese PDFs?

Yes. CastReader auto-detects the language and switches to native Mandarin, Japanese or Korean voices. Mixed-language selections switch voice at sentence boundaries.

Can my company deploy this to multiple Macs?

Yes. CastReader is free to start with no license key or activation, so IT can distribute the .dmg through MDM like any other .app. Individual users can upgrade to Pro when they need premium voices.

Is it free?

Yes — CastReader is free to start: standard voices, no account, no credit card. CastReader Pro (optional) adds premium ultra-realistic voices, more listening hours, voice cloning, and AI document analysis.

What happens to my documents?

Only the text you select is sent to generate audio. CastReader doesn't store your document content, never modifies the PDF, and doesn't need access to any Adobe account.

★★★★★
This is 1 of the best TTS and its smooth. If this is truly free i'll keep this 100%. Every other TTS says its free but has a secret. They interrupt or they just say better ai voices pay. But i like this voice. I've tried loads and this is 1 of the best ones that actually says free.

Works perfectly on vivaldi. One suggestion though. I wish it had a play button appear next to a paragraph when we hover over it. Just like in the case of speechify.
Loic COBBINA · Chrome Web Store

Extremely user friendly short keys. Placed forward backward and speed up down as Natural as it could be. Voices are great and smooth. I would recommend it over many hyped products.

At the very least it's better than many paid TTS models. Still not as good as ElevenReader or LAP, but maybe the best free model for TTS.

So glad I can finally switch voices! The default was fine but I found one I actually enjoy listening to for hours. Small thing, huge difference.
patrick chiang · Chrome Web Store

Best one i found, user friendly, and great voice over.

ChatGPT's long answers are finally listenable. Let it generate while I listen — doubles my productivity. Love the inline button next to each response.

I tried using this add-on to listen to an ebook on the O'Reilly learning platform, and it works smoothly. However, it always restarts from the first paragraph whenever I scroll or select a different paragraph. Please consider adding a bookmark or checkpoint feature so users can mark where the reading should begin.

Why This Exists

I built CastReader because I owned hundreds of Kindle books and couldn't listen to them on my morning runs without buying separate Audible copies. The technical problem — Amazon's Cloud Reader font encryption — turned out to be solvable with OCR. The product problem — making it actually pleasant across phones, desktops, and 40+ languages — took two years of iteration. We're a small team. I answer every Chrome Web Store review personally (see testimonials above — including the 3-star and 1-star ones). If something's broken or missing, email support@castreader.ai.
