Not Just TTS — A Reading Companion

An OpenClaw skill that reads with you, not just to you

Sync Your Real Bookshelf

Books you bought on Kindle or WeRead — synced directly via OpenClaw's browser automation. No manual uploads, no copy-paste, no file conversions.

Chapter-by-Chapter Discussion

AI reads the same chapter you're reading. Ask about plot twists, character motivations, historical context, or that paragraph you didn't quite get. It remembers everything.

Listen on Demand

Say 'read this chapter to me' and ClawBot delivers natural AI audio right in Telegram or WhatsApp. Perfect for commutes, workouts, or when your eyes need a break.

Chinese & English, Auto-Detected

Reading a Chinese novel? English non-fiction? AI detects the language and applies the right voice, speed, and discussion style automatically.

Your Books Stay Yours

Book data syncs to your local machine via OpenClaw. Nothing is uploaded to any cloud. CastReader acts as a bridge between your library and the AI.

Built on OpenClaw

Questions

Everything you need to know about reading with AI

Is it free?

Yes — CastReader is free to use, and both OpenClaw and the CastReader skill are free to install. CastReader Pro (optional) adds premium ultra-realistic voices, more listening hours, voice cloning, and AI document analysis.

What is OpenClaw?

OpenClaw is an open-source AI agent platform that runs on your computer and connects to Telegram, WhatsApp, and iMessage. CastReader is a 'skill' (plugin) for OpenClaw — it gives your AI agent the ability to sync books and read them aloud. Think of OpenClaw as the platform, CastReader as the reading ability.

How do I install it?

1) Install OpenClaw from openclaw.com. 2) Run 'clawhub install castreader' to add the CastReader skill. 3) Open Telegram and start chatting with your ClawBot. That's it — your AI reading companion is ready.

Which book sources are supported?

Currently Kindle Cloud Reader (read.amazon.com) and WeRead (微信读书). OpenClaw opens a browser on your machine to sync — you just need to be logged in.

Can the AI understand Chinese books?

Yes. The AI auto-detects the language of your book and adjusts its discussion and TTS voice accordingly. It handles both Chinese and English natively, including mixed-language content.

How is this different from the Chrome extension?

The Chrome extension reads any webpage aloud with real-time highlighting — it's a TTS tool in the browser. Read with AI is an OpenClaw skill: it syncs your personal book library, discusses chapters with you, and delivers audio to your messaging app. Different tools for different needs.

Do I need the Chrome extension too?

No — they're independent products. The AI reading companion works entirely through OpenClaw + Telegram/WhatsApp. But if you also want to read web articles aloud in the browser, the Chrome extension is a great complement.

Is my book data safe?

Book content syncs to your local machine only — OpenClaw runs locally. Nothing is uploaded to any cloud server. The AI reads from your local copy during conversations.

★★★★★
This is 1 of the best TTS and its smooth. If this is truly free i'll keep this 100%. Every other TTS says its free but has a secret. They interrupt or they just say better ai voices pay. But i like this voice. I've tried loads and this is 1 of the best ones that actually says free.

Works perfectly on vivaldi. One suggestion though. I wish it had a play button appear next to a paragraph when we hover over it. Just like in the case of speechify.
Loic COBBINA · Chrome Web Store
★★★★★
Extremely user friendly short keys. Placed forward backward and speed up down as Natural as it could be. Voices are great and smooth. I would recommend it over many hyped products.

★★★★★
At the very least it's better than many paid TTS models. Still not as good as ElevenReader or LAP, but maybe the best free model for TTS.

So glad I can finally switch voices! The default was fine but I found one I actually enjoy listening to for hours. Small thing, huge difference.
patrick chiang · Chrome Web Store
★★★★★
Best one i found, user friendly, and great voice over.

ChatGPT's long answers are finally listenable. Let it generate while I listen — doubles my productivity. Love the inline button next to each response.

I tried using this add-on to listen to an ebook on the O'Reilly learning platform, and it works smoothly. However, it always restarts from the first paragraph whenever I scroll or select a different paragraph. Please consider adding a bookmark or checkpoint feature so users can mark where the reading should begin.

  4. CastReader for Mac released

Native macOS app reads Kindle for Mac with word-level highlighting. Floating player + system-wide hotkeys. No browser needed.

  5. Featured on Product Hunt

Ranked #10 in Daily, 99 upvotes, 4 community comments shaped the v1.2 roadmap.

  6. Voice quality upgrade — Kokoro AI

Switched from older TTS engines to Kokoro neural voices. User reviews shifted from 'usable but robotic' to 'enjoy listening for hours' (verbatim from review by patrick chiang).

  7. First wave of extraction reliability improvements

OCR success rate improved from 78% to 89% on English-language Kindle books. Multi-column page detection added for academic PDFs.

Why This Exists

I built CastReader because I owned hundreds of Kindle books and couldn't listen to them on my morning runs without buying separate Audible copies. The technical problem — Amazon's Cloud Reader font encryption — turned out to be solvable with OCR. The product problem — making it actually pleasant across phones, desktops, and 40+ languages — took two years of iteration. We're a small team. I answer every Chrome Web Store review personally (see testimonials above — including the 3-star and 1-star ones). If something's broken or missing, email support@castreader.ai.
