Where CastReader fits

For the desktop app itself, Amazon’s own Assistive Reader is the right tool — a browser extension cannot reach inside a native Mac application. Where it does not reach is the other way you probably read on a Mac: Kindle Cloud Reader in Chrome or Edge, which has no read-aloud at all. That browser gap is where CastReader works.

No built-in read-aloud

No. Amazon does not list Windows among the platforms that get Assistive Reader — which surprises people, because the Mac app does have it.

What to know

  • What Windows offers instead is screen-reader support: Narrator (built into Windows 11), NVDA 2017.1 or later, and JAWS. Those read the interface, not a comfortable book-listening experience.

Where CastReader fits

On Windows, a browser extension reading Kindle Cloud Reader is usually more comfortable than driving a screen reader through the desktop app.

Kindle Paperwhite / Oasis / Scribe / basic Kindle (e-ink)

Only via screen reader

Partly — but not the way most people hope. E-ink Kindles have no speaker and no headphone jack; the only audio path is VoiceView, a screen reader, over Bluetooth.

How to turn it on

  1. Pair a Bluetooth speaker or Bluetooth headphones with your Kindle.
  2. Turn on VoiceView from accessibility settings.
  3. Navigate with VoiceView gestures — the screen reader speaks what is on screen.

What to know

  • Modern e-ink Kindles have no speaker and no headphone jack, so a Bluetooth audio device is mandatory.
  • VoiceView over Bluetooth is available in only 6 languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish.
  • VoiceView is a screen reader built for blind and low-vision users, not a "read my book to me" feature — it also announces interface elements.
  • Older models without Bluetooth need the discontinued Kindle Audio Adapter.

Where CastReader fits

If VoiceView is not what you wanted — or your language is not in the six it supports — reading the same book in Cloud Reader or the phone app gives you a normal listening experience.

Kindle Cloud Reader in a browser (read.amazon.com)

No built-in read-aloud

No. Amazon has never shipped text-to-speech in Kindle Cloud Reader, and ordinary TTS extensions fail there for a specific technical reason.

What to know

  • There is no built-in read-aloud button to find — this is not a setting you have missed.
  • Cloud Reader renders book text with custom subset fonts whose character mappings are scrambled. Your eyes see correct words because the font remaps them; anything reading the page text sees jumbled characters.
  • That is why a browser extension has to read the rendered page visually (OCR) rather than copy the text.

Where CastReader fits

This is the gap CastReader was built for: the browser extension reads the rendered page with OCR, so scrambled font mappings do not matter. It also explains passages in your own language as you listen.

Audible narration for the same book

Separate purchase

Separate purchase. Buying the Kindle edition does not include the Audible edition, and only some titles have one at all.

What to know

  • The narrated version is a separate purchase, sometimes at a reduced Whispersync price.
  • Only a subset of Kindle books has a matching Audible edition.

Where CastReader fits

If you already own the Kindle edition, text-to-speech lets you listen without buying the narrated version a second time.

通常のWeb読み上げがKindleで失敗する理由

Kindle Cloud Readerは本によって文字を通常のHTML本文とは異なる形で表示するため、DOMだけを読む拡張機能では抽出できない場合があります。

日本語のKindle読み上げ方法を選ぶ

Kindleの読み上げ可否は、端末、アプリ版、本、言語、出版社の設定によって異なります。まずAmazonの現在のAssistive ReaderやVoiceViewを確認してください。

パソコンで本がKindle Cloud Readerに表示できる場合、CastReaderはChromeまたはEdge上の可視ページをOCRで読み取る方法を提供します。通常のWeb本文抽出とは異なるため、表示形式によって結果が変わります。

日本語音声はBeta/Labです。固有名詞、数字、英字を含む段落で発音を試し、速度とハイライトが読み方に合うか確認してから長文を始めてください。

Read & Explainは、対応する抽出テキストの難しい箇所を短く、標準、詳しく説明する補助機能です。本へのアクセスを付与したり、DRMや購入制限を回避したりするものではありません。

自分が正当に閲覧できる内容だけで使用し、抽出が不完全な場合は中止してAmazon公式のアクセシビリティ機能または正規のオーディオブックを選んでください。
