You Cannot Select Transcript Text in the YouTube App

Long-press a line in YouTube's transcript panel on a phone and nothing happens — selection is disabled there. It is not your device and not a setting you missed. There are three ways around it; this page is about which one to use for what, and how to avoid ending up with a wall of timestamps.

Why it is blockedThree workarounds comparedGetting clean textDesktop route included

The YouTube mobile app disables text selection inside its transcript panel, so pressing and holding a line does not offer Copy. Three routes get around it. First, open the video in a mobile browser and request the desktop site — the desktop layout allows selection, though selecting long passages on a small screen is awkward and you get a timestamp before every line. Second, paste the video link into a transcript service, which returns the text as a file or a copyable block. Third, open the video in an app that presents the transcript as ordinary selectable text: sharing the video to CastReader gives paragraphs you can select and copy directly, without timestamps interleaved. Which is right depends on whether you need one quote or the whole thing.

Three Routes, Compared Honestly

Including where each one is annoying

Desktop Mode in a Mobile Browser

Open the video in Chrome or Safari, request the desktop site, then open Show transcript. Selection works in the desktop layout. Free and needs nothing installed — but the desktop layout on a phone screen is fiddly, dragging a selection across a long transcript is slow, and each line arrives with its timestamp attached, so you clean up afterwards.

Paste the Link Into a Transcript Service

Copy the video link, paste it into a web transcript tool, and get the text back as a block or a download. Good when you want the entire transcript as a file. The costs: you leave what you were doing, many services meter or gate longer videos, and you are handing the link to a third party.

Open It Somewhere Selection Works

Share the video from YouTube to CastReader and the transcript opens as ordinary text — select a sentence, select the lot, copy as normal. Cues are merged into paragraphs, so what you paste reads like prose rather than a timestamped list. Works on the same phone you are already holding.

Timestamps Are the Real Time Sink

Both browser routes give you one timestamp per caption cue. For a forty-minute talk that is hundreds of stray numbers to strip out, which is where the twenty-to-forty minutes people report spending actually goes. Paragraph-merged text skips that step entirely.

The Fastest Route on a Phone

  1. 1

    Tap Share in YouTube

On the video you want, open the share panel — the same one you would use to send the link to someone.

  2. 2

    Choose CastReader

If the video has public captions, its transcript opens as paragraphs. If it has none, you are told immediately instead of being left to find out.

  3. 3

    Select and copy

Press and hold as you would in any app. Take one sentence for a quote, or select the whole thing. No timestamps mixed into what you paste.

Why Selection Is Blocked, and What That Means for Your Workflow

The YouTube mobile app renders its transcript panel in a way that does not expose the text to the system's selection gesture. Long-press a line and you get nothing — no handles, no Copy. The desktop web player behaves differently: there the transcript is ordinary page text and selects normally. So the limitation is specific to the mobile app, which is unfortunate, because the phone is exactly where people are when they want to save a quote.

That gap has produced a small industry of workarounds, and the honest summary is that all of them trade something. Desktop mode in a mobile browser is free and needs no install, but you are dragging a selection across a cramped desktop layout, and every line comes with a timestamp glued to it. Web transcript services hand back the whole thing at once, which is right when you want a file, at the cost of leaving your current context and passing the link to someone else's server.

The cleanup is the part people underestimate. A transcript copied from either browser route arrives as a timestamped list, one cue per line, and turning that into a paragraph you can quote means deleting hundreds of stray numbers by hand on a phone keyboard. This is where the twenty to forty minutes per episode that people describe actually goes — not the copying, the tidying.

The third route sidesteps both problems by changing where the transcript is displayed rather than how you extract it. CastReader takes the same public caption track, merges the cues back into paragraphs, and shows it as normal selectable text. Selecting works because it is just text; the paste is clean because the timestamps were never interleaved into it in the first place.

One thing none of these routes can change: if the video has no caption track, there is nothing to copy by any method. Before spending time on workarounds, check whether the transcript exists at all — expand the description and look for the "Show transcript" row. If it is not there, the video has no captions, and only a speech-to-text service that listens to the audio can produce text.

Worth knowing about accuracy too, since a quote is only as good as its source. Where the creator uploaded captions by hand, the text has punctuation and speaker turns and can be quoted more or less directly. Where only automatic captions exist, expect no punctuation, no speaker labels, and the occasional confidently wrong word — check anything you plan to attribute to someone against the audio before you publish it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Getting the text out, and what to watch for

Why can't I copy text from the YouTube transcript on my phone?

The YouTube mobile app disables text selection in its transcript panel, so long-pressing a line offers no Copy option. It is a limitation of that panel, not of your device. The desktop web player does allow selection.

What is the fastest way to copy a transcript on a phone?

Share the video from YouTube to an app that shows the transcript as ordinary text. In CastReader the cues are merged into paragraphs, so you select and copy as you would anywhere else and the result has no timestamps mixed in.

How do I use desktop mode to copy it?

Open the video in your mobile browser rather than the app, request the desktop site from the browser menu, then open Show transcript. Selection works in the desktop layout. Expect a timestamp before every line, and awkward dragging on a small screen.

How do I get rid of the timestamps?

On the desktop web transcript there is a toggle to hide timestamps before you copy, which saves a lot of cleanup. Otherwise you are deleting them by hand — the main reason people report spending twenty to forty minutes on a single episode.

Can I copy the whole transcript at once?

Yes with all three routes. In desktop mode, select from the first line to the last. In a transcript service, the whole text comes back together. In CastReader, select across the paragraphs as you would in any document.

Does this work if the video has no captions?

No. Every method here reads the video's caption track, so a video without one has nothing to copy. Check by expanding the description and looking for "Show transcript" — if the row is missing, there is no track.

Is it okay to quote a YouTube transcript?

Normal quotation and citation rules apply, as with any source. Worth noting that automatic captions misrecognise words, so verify anything you attribute to a person against the audio before publishing it.

Can I get the transcript as a file?

Web transcript services typically return a downloadable text file. CastReader keeps the transcript in the app for reading, listening and copying rather than exporting a file.

This is 1 of the best TTS and its smooth. If this is truly free i'll keep this 100%. Every other TTS says its free but has a secret. They interrupt or they just say better ai voices pay. But i like this voice. I've tried loads and this is 1 of the best ones that actually says free.

Works perfectly on vivaldi. One suggestion though. I wish it had a play button appear next to a paragraph when we hover over it. Just like in the case of speechify.

Extremely user friendly short keys. Placed forward backward and speed up down as Natural as it could be. Voices are great and smooth. I would recommend it over many hyped products.

At the very least it's better than many paid TTS models. Still not as good as ElevenReader or LAP, but maybe the best free model for TTS.

So glad I can finally switch voices! The default was fine but I found one I actually enjoy listening to for hours. Small thing, huge difference.

I tried using this add-on to listen to an ebook on the O'Reilly learning platform, and it works smoothly. However, it always restarts from the first paragraph whenever I scroll or select a different paragraph. Please consider adding a bookmark or checkpoint feature so users can mark where the reading should begin.
