Listen while keeping the original story in view
Open a chapter whose story text is visible to you, then click CastReader. AO3 access restrictions and content warnings still apply; the extension does not unlock restricted works. Check the selected AI voice and any account prompt before starting.
CastReader aims to extract chapter prose rather than tags, notes, kudos, comments, or navigation. Results depend on AO3's current layout, the reading view, and your extension version. Listen to the first paragraphs and stop if text is missing or unrelated content is included.
On supported rendered text, the active passage is highlighted and the page follows along. You can click an extracted paragraph to change position. Keep the reading tab visible and check that the highlight matches what you hear.
CastReader offers a limited free tier. AI sign-in requirements, available voices, listening allowance, and Pro features follow your installed extension version and account. Check the voice picker and usage display before starting a long chapter; cloud AI reading sends extracted text to the voice service.
Everything you need to know about listening to AO3 fanfiction
Install CastReader from the Chrome Web Store. Open an AO3 chapter you can access and wait until its text is visible. Click CastReader, check the available AI voice and account requirements, and verify the first paragraphs and highlights. If extraction is wrong, stop and use the installed version's text-selection or content-selection controls.
This walkthrough uses the CastReader browser extension, not an AO3-native audio player. It reads accessible, rendered text in your current browser view and does not grant access to restricted works.
The chapter extractor aims to leave tags, author notes, comments, and navigation out of the reading text. That is not a guarantee for every layout or extension version. Check the opening paragraphs; notes may be omitted, so read them separately when they matter. If unrelated text is included, stop and select the story text using the controls available in your installed version.
CastReader aims to read the chapter prose already rendered in the current view. In Entire Work view, several chapters may be on the same page; this is not a queue of separate works or a promise of automatic chapter navigation. Check the first paragraphs and chapter boundaries. Availability and extraction can vary with the page and installed version.
There is a limited free tier, not a promise of unlimited or no-signup AI reading. Check the installed extension's account prompts, available voices, and remaining allowance. Premium voices and longer listening may require Pro; AO3 access and CastReader access are separate.
Use the speed control in your installed extension. Some faster settings require Pro. Start with an available setting and confirm that the audio and highlight remain easy to follow before increasing it.
Supported rendered text can be highlighted as it is read, with scrolling to follow the active passage. Keep the reading tab visible and verify that the highlight follows the spoken text. Stop and reselect the content if extraction or synchronization is wrong.
CastReader has Chrome and Edge extensions. Store versions can differ, so use the version installed in your browser and test the current AO3 page; a result on Chrome does not prove identical behavior on Edge.
