Why Listen to Wattpad with CastReader?

Listen while keeping the current chapter in view

Start with Text You Can Access

Open a chapter whose story text is visible to you, then click CastReader. The extension does not unlock paid stories, bypass a login, or reveal unavailable text. Check the selected AI voice and any CastReader account prompt before starting.

Check the Extracted Story Text

Wattpad reading uses the text rendered in your current browser page. Extraction depends on the current layout and installed extension version; ads, notes, or navigation are not guaranteed to be excluded. Check the first paragraphs and stop if the reader picks up the wrong content.

Paragraph Highlighting

On supported rendered text, the active passage is highlighted and the page follows along. Click an extracted paragraph to change position. Keep the reading tab visible and confirm that the highlight matches what you hear.

Check Your Available Reading Time

CastReader offers a limited free tier. AI sign-in requirements, available voices, listening allowance, and Pro features follow your installed extension version and account. Check the voice picker and usage display before starting a long chapter; cloud AI reading sends extracted text to the voice service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about listening to Wattpad stories

How do I listen to Wattpad stories?

Install CastReader from the Chrome Web Store. Open a Wattpad chapter you can access and wait for the text to render. Click CastReader, check your available voice and account requirements, and verify the first paragraphs and highlights. If extraction is wrong, stop and use the text-selection or content-selection controls available in your installed version.

Does Wattpad have a built-in text-to-speech feature?

This walkthrough does not depend on Wattpad's own TTS. If your story offers a native listen control, you can check that first. CastReader is a separate browser extension for accessible rendered text; it is not guaranteed to work on every story and does not unlock content.

Does it skip ads and navigation?

CastReader aims to find the story body, but Wattpad layout changes and extension versions can affect the result. Check the first paragraphs rather than assuming every ad, note, or recommendation is excluded. If needed, stop and select just the accessible story text using your installed version's controls.

Is it free?

There is a limited free tier, not a promise of unlimited or no-signup AI reading. Check the installed extension's account prompts, available voices, and remaining allowance. Premium voices and longer listening may require Pro; paying for CastReader does not unlock Wattpad stories.

Can I listen to multi-chapter stories?

Read one accessible chapter at a time. Open Wattpad's next part manually, wait for the new text to appear, and start CastReader again. Wattpad automatic next-part playback is not supported; there is no background queue that unlocks or fetches the rest of the story.

Does it highlight text as it reads?

Supported rendered text can be highlighted as it is read, with scrolling to follow the active passage. Keep the reading tab visible and check that the spoken text matches the highlight. Stop and reselect the story text if extraction or synchronization is wrong.

What languages does it support?

Check the language and voice picker in your installed extension for the current catalog. Availability, pronunciation, and synchronization vary by language, voice, account, and version. Test a short passage in the story's language before continuing; do not assume every language or voice is included in the free tier.

Does it work on Edge?

CastReader has Chrome and Edge extensions. Store versions can differ, so test the current Wattpad chapter in the version installed in your browser. A Chrome result does not prove identical Edge behavior.

★★★★★
This is 1 of the best TTS and its smooth. If this is truly free i'll keep this 100%. Every other TTS says its free but has a secret. They interrupt or they just say better ai voices pay. But i like this voice. I've tried loads and this is 1 of the best ones that actually says free.

Works perfectly on vivaldi. One suggestion though. I wish it had a play button appear next to a paragraph when we hover over it. Just like in the case of speechify.
Loic COBBINA · Chrome Web Store
★★★★★
Extremely user friendly short keys. Placed forward backward and speed up down as Natural as it could be. Voices are great and smooth. I would recommend it over many hyped products.
grann tosif · Chrome Web Store

At the very least it's better than many paid TTS models. Still not as good as ElevenReader or LAP, but maybe the best free model for TTS.

So glad I can finally switch voices! The default was fine but I found one I actually enjoy listening to for hours. Small thing, huge difference.
patrick chiang · Chrome Web Store
★★★★★
Best one i found, user friendly, and great voice over.

ChatGPT's long answers are finally listenable. Let it generate while I listen — doubles my productivity. Love the inline button next to each response.

I tried using this add-on to listen to an ebook on the O'Reilly learning platform, and it works smoothly. However, it always restarts from the first paragraph whenever I scroll or select a different paragraph. Please consider adding a bookmark or checkpoint feature so users can mark where the reading should begin.

Recent Updates

We re-test, re-write, and ship continuously. Every entry has a real date.

  1. Site-wide trust signals refresh

Rewrote landing pages with verbatim Chrome Web Store testimonials, real audiobook market data, and tested-12-extensions methodology. Every claim now has a sourceable link.

  2. Native mobile listening

CastReader provides native apps for iPhone and Android; Android downloads are available directly from Google Play.

  3. Technical deep-dive published

Wrote up the OCR pipeline: how CastReader handles Amazon's 184 random font alphabets and 361 unique glyphs per Kindle book. Shared in dev.to.

  4. Mobile Kindle Read Aloud page added

The phone app flow now has its own landing page for bookshelf sync, Read Aloud, synced highlighting, auto-scroll, background playback, and resume progress.

  5. Featured on Product Hunt

Ranked #10 in Daily, 99 upvotes, 4 community comments shaped the v1.2 roadmap.

  6. Voice quality upgrade — Kokoro AI

Switched from older TTS engines to Kokoro neural voices. User reviews shifted from 'usable but robotic' to 'enjoy listening for hours' (verbatim from review by patrick chiang).

  7. First wave of extraction reliability improvements

OCR success rate improved from 78% to 89% on English-language Kindle books. Multi-column page detection added for academic PDFs.

Why This Exists

I built CastReader because I owned hundreds of Kindle books and couldn't listen to them on my morning runs without buying separate Audible copies. The technical problem — Amazon's Cloud Reader font encryption — turned out to be solvable with OCR. The product problem — making it actually pleasant across phones, desktops, and 9 supported languages — took two years of iteration. We're a small team. I answer every Chrome Web Store review personally (see testimonials above — including the 3-star and 1-star ones). If something's broken or missing, email support@castreader.ai.
