If speech starts but reads interface controls instead of the chapter, move focus back to the text and try Accessibility Reader. A screen reader such as VoiceOver is designed to announce interface elements because it supports full navigation; Speak Screen is usually simpler for casual listening. Understanding that difference prevents toolbar announcements from being mistaken for a broken voice.

If the book is already an audiobook, use the Apple Books audiobook player for chapter navigation, speed, sleep timer, and produced narration. It does not reproduce performance choices, pronunciations, music, or production available in a professionally narrated edition.
