The narrator of “The Tell-Tale Heart” is eager to convince you. Before there is much of a story, there is already an argument about how you should judge the person telling it. That makes this very short work particularly interesting to hear: the claim to calmness and the sound of the language do not always pull in the same direction.
For a free copy, choose one of two checked English EPUB routes:
- Just this story: open The Tell-Tale Heart on epubBooks, choose the Download button beside EPUB, then use the Download link in the popup. The site generates a temporary file link, so bookmark the book page rather than that expiring address. We obtained the complete, DRM-free story without an account.
- A collection containing the story: download Gutenberg’s Works of Edgar Allan Poe, Volume 2 EPUB. This is a complete collection, not a standalone Tell-Tale Heart file. Choose the story in the contents; the volume opens with “The Purloined Letter.”
For reading without a download, open The Tell-Tale Heart directly in Gutenberg’s HTML text. The anchor goes to the story’s heading, not the beginning of the collection.

A short story can hide inside a very large download
Poe’s story was first published in January 1843, in The Pioneer, as recorded in the National Park Service’s timeline of his Philadelphia years. If you are comparing punctuation or quoting for class, identify the text your teacher assigned rather than assuming every reproduction is identical.
The Gutenberg catalog record for ebook 2148 explicitly lists “The Tell-Tale Heart” among the contents of Volume 2. A search result for a biography of Poe, an essay about the story, or another volume is not a substitute. Likewise, the page count on a modern illustrated edition is not the length you should expect on a phone.
We downloaded both EPUB options above and checked their English metadata, unencrypted structure, opening and final passage. The epubBooks file contains the standalone story; the Gutenberg file contains other tales as well. Both are actual EPUB files rather than samples or ACSM loan authorizations. The epubBooks page describes its edition as DRM-free. Gutenberg identifies its volume as public domain in the USA; check local rules outside the United States. Do not assume that a modern translation or added artwork has the same status.
There is no need to purchase an ebook to obtain this original English story through these routes. The practical choice is simply whether you want one short work or a collection to return to afterward.
First pass: listen to the speaker’s effort to persuade you
Try the story once without consulting a summary. Its opening makes the narrator’s concern clear: being believed about their own state of mind. Notice each point at which the speaker addresses an imagined listener or presents a careful action as proof of sound judgment.
You do not need to diagnose the narrator. A more useful question is: does the evidence offered actually establish the claim? Being able to plan a sequence of actions is not the same thing as giving a convincing reason for those actions. Keep that distinction in mind when the speaker praises their own caution.
The old man’s eye and the narrator’s hearing matter, but let the text establish how. On a first reading, avoid an explanation that turns every object into a fixed symbol before you have heard the story’s progression. The uncertainty about whose account you can trust is part of the reading experience.
Content note: the story includes murder, dismemberment and intense fear. It is brief, but not a gentle bedtime tale.
Second pass: separate a report from an inference
After finishing, return to one passage that felt especially convincing. Make two short notes:
What the narrator reports: an action, a sound, a visit, a movement.
What the narrator concludes: what that event supposedly proves about themselves or another person.
Then ask whether you have independent confirmation of the conclusion. A confident voice can make an inference sound like a fact. Re-reading while listening lets you notice that difference without requiring a long set of literary terms.
Try the opening at a slightly slower pace and pay attention to repeated words, interruptions and questions. Does it sound composed to you? Now read it silently. A synthetic voice may smooth a dash or emphasize a word differently, so use the visible punctuation to make your own judgment. TTS can help you notice the rhetoric; it cannot settle the story’s meaning for you.
This approach also helps if the ending is already familiar. Federico DN’s Goodreads review found the story less surprising after encountering a parody and wanted more length. Jess the Shelf-Declared Bibliophile, by contrast, valued the questions it leaves open. Recent October 30 feedback from Layla Webb also focuses on what the short story invites readers to think about. These are individual responses; knowing the plot need not exhaust what the narration does.
For a longer comparison afterward, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde moves between witnesses and written accounts. Compare how much access each story gives you to evidence outside a speaker’s own explanation.
Set up TTS for the story, not the collection’s first page
Open the CastReader EPUB workspace and select the EPUB you saved. With the standalone file, choose The Tell-Tale Heart after any title or license pages. With Gutenberg Volume 2, use the contents to find that exact title. Before pressing Play for a longer session, check the opening: it should begin with the narrator describing being nervous. If you see “The Purloined Letter,” you have opened the collection correctly but selected the wrong story.
Choose an available device voice for free reading without signing in. The web tool parses the EPUB locally. CastReader AI voices require sign-in and follow plan limits; cloud voices send reading text for synthesis. Neither file needs DRM removal. We checked the downloads, not full-story playback on every supported device, and the web tool does not export an MP3.
If you prefer a webpage, download the appropriate CastReader app or extension and follow the Gutenberg setup. Open the direct story link at the top and confirm the highlighted opening before continuing. Following a chapter anchor or returning to an old reading position does not guarantee that every reader will automatically start at the first sentence.
For the shortest route, get the standalone EPUB and open it in the EPUB reader. For an immediate page, read the full story here. Sources and download details checked October 30, 2026.
