American Hagwon: EPUB Access, the Koh Family and How to Begin

American Hagwon asks what a family is really buying when it sacrifices almost everything for education. A more secure future? Social standing? The children's happiness? Those goals can point in different directions.

Min Jin Lee's novel follows John and Helen Koh and their children Bo, DH, and Mido as the family's circumstances change across Korea, Australia, and Southern California. Before you begin this long family story, here is the practical answer to finding it: Sacramento Public Library's exact ebook record lists a full English EPUB loan. Check borrowing first; the Kobo English EPUB is the paid fallback.

Where to get the English EPUB

The library record identifies ISBN 9781538752043 and lists EPUB ebook, OverDrive Read, and Kindle Book. A member with an eligible card can borrow or place a hold according to the library's availability. Where EPUB download is offered for your loan, follow its authorized reader setup. You do not receive an unrestricted file to keep permanently or import into any app.

If Sacramento is not your library, use that ISBN to check your own collection. A book existing in one library's catalog does not mean that every Libby account can borrow it. Download protection, loan periods, and regional eligibility still apply.

For purchase, Kobo's US edition lists English EPUB 3 with Adobe DRM, released September 29, 2026. This is a store listing, not a free download button. An eligible account and payment are required; read the resulting protected edition through a compatible authorized reader. An ACSM authorization file is not a standalone EPUB that CastReader can open.

A separate English Kindle edition is available on Amazon. Choose it if the Kindle reading environment suits you, rather than buying it on the assumption that it can be exported as EPUB. We have not verified that export option for this edition.

We searched publisher, author, library, and ebook-store sources and did not verify an openly downloadable, authorized free complete English EPUB or PDF. A review copy application or an online sample is not the same thing. The library route above is the concrete option to investigate before buying.

What does hagwon mean here?

A hagwon is a private educational academy or tutoring institution in Korea, as this Cambridge University Press introduction to English education in Korea explains. In this novel's title, it provides a useful starting question about the larger family project: how much of life becomes preparation for the next examination, credential, or opportunity?

The author's introduction places the story between 1992 and 2007. The family begins with a level of security that later events undermine. Moving countries changes the value of the parents' experience and qualifications, while education remains central to their hopes for their children. The publisher's announcement presents the book as another part of Lee's exploration of the Korean diaspora.

You can begin with the Koh family without treating Pachinko as homework. The relevant preparation is curiosity about how the same sacrifice can look generous to one family member and burdensome to another. This guide keeps later outcomes out of the discussion.

Keep five people in view, then let the circle grow

Instead of looking up a full character list that may spoil later relationships, start a note with just these entries:

PersonStarting connectionA question to update as you read
John KohParentWhat does he believe he must restore or provide?
Helen KohParentWhat work or compromise makes the family's plans possible?
BoOne of the Koh childrenWhen does a family ambition feel like a personal choice?
DHOne of the Koh childrenWhat does success mean in this person's immediate surroundings?
MidoOne of the Koh childrenWhich expectations are accepted, questioned, or reinterpreted?

The questions are reading prompts, not claims about where each character's story ends. Add one sentence when your understanding changes. You do not need a biography for every person on their first appearance.

Also note where the family is living and what year it is. An educational decision made in one country may have different stakes after a move. Tracking that change is more useful than trying to remember a page number from another edition.

Expect everyday detail as well as family drama

The reading decision is not simply whether you enjoy multigenerational fiction. It is also whether you like a novel to spend time on the institutions and practical arrangements surrounding a family.

Lisa NY's October 6 Goodreads review values the detailed attention to financial and educational circumstances. Traci Thomas's October 3 response finds parts of the drama and writing effective while feeling that some sections run long. In a recent October 9 review, Lynn Peterson specifically wishes she had understood the title's educational term earlier and is more mixed about the length. These are individual responses, not a measured consensus; full reviews can reveal plot details.

Try the library record's Read a sample before spending money. Notice whether the account of work, money, and schooling draws you further into the people or keeps you at a distance. A longer sample is more informative here than judging the book only by its relationship to a previous bestseller.

For a first week, schedule several manageable sessions rather than a daily page quota. At the end of each, record the place, the family member most in focus, and the problem still unresolved. This makes returning after a missed day easier without consulting a spoiler-filled recap.

Use TTS to return to the story, not to rush past it

For listening, start a session by reading your own three-line location note. Keep the page visible when unfamiliar names or institutions appear. If a voice loses the distinction between a name and an ordinary word, look at the spelling and slow down for that passage; synthetic pronunciation is not an authoritative language guide.

If your Kindle purchase, or an eligible Kindle library loan, opens the book on read.amazon.com, CastReader's Kindle route is an option for reading the rendered page in desktop Chrome or Edge. Get the browser extension, open a passage your account can access, and check a short segment first. The reader uses local OCR for the visible Kindle page and sends extracted text to its voice service. It does not unlock restricted pages or export the ebook. We have not performed an American Hagwon-specific playback test.

The CastReader EPUB tool is for compatible, authorized DRM-free files, not the protected Kobo or library EPUB described above. If you obtain such a file from another verified source, available device voices work without an account; cloud AI reading requires sign-in and follows your plan allowance. The book is parsed locally, while cloud playback sends text needed for reading, including buffered passages, for processing.

Choose the edition first, then the listening method it actually supports. A useful result is being able to return to the Koh family with your place and questions intact, whether that means a library reader, a Kindle page, or a compatible file.

Source and access details checked October 10, 2026. Store and library listings were inspected; no purchase, library loan, ebook export, or complete-book playback was performed.
