Sunrise on the Reaping: What to Read First and Where to Listen

If this is your first Hunger Games book, our recommendation is to begin with The Hunger Games and read in publication order. Sunrise on the Reaping happens earlier in the fictional timeline, but “set earlier” and “best starting point” answer different questions. If you already know the original trilogy, you can make a more direct return to Haymitch's story.

Below are three ways to approach the book, the correct English audiobook to look for, and a useful distinction for anyone searching for a PDF: Scholastic offers a free reading guide, not a free download of the complete novel.

First, know which story you are choosing

Suzanne Collins returns to Panem for the Fiftieth Hunger Games, twenty-four years before the first novel. Haymitch is a teenager in District 12, and this Quarter Quell demands twice the usual number of tributes. That is the setup, not an ending summary. Scholastic's announcement identifies the book and its place in the series.

Choose it if the cost of the Games, political control, and Haymitch's earlier life are what you want to explore. If you are looking for a light adventure, preview the opening first: the premise involves young people forced into lethal competition. Familiarity with a film does not remove that material from the book.

We keep this guide free of deaths, alliances, and late-story revelations. Character wikis and searches containing “ending explained” are better saved until after you finish.

Choose the reading order that fits where you are

For a first reading, we recommend this publication sequence. The original trilogy introduces the world through Katniss before the prequels ask you to look back at it.

OrderBookFirst publication
1The Hunger Games2008
2Catching Fire2009
3Mockingjay2010
4The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes2020
5Sunrise on the Reaping2025

The titles and publication history are documented in Scholastic's series reading guide. The recommendation to use that order is ours.

Already read the original trilogy? If you also plan to read Ballad, put it before Sunrise for the complete publication-order experience. If Haymitch is your immediate interest, you do not need to turn the decision into a five-book reread. Return to your own notes from the trilogy, then decide whether you want the earlier prequel first. Avoid using a Sunrise recap to refresh a book you have not yet read.

Only watched the films? You have some orientation, but a film memory is not a substitute for the novels' details. Start with the original book if you want the fuller reading experience. Starting with Sunrise remains your choice; this is a recommendation about context, not an access requirement.

Rereading in story chronology? The sequence is Ballad → Sunrise → The Hunger Games → Catching Fire → Mockingjay. It is a useful alternative once you already know the stories. For a first pass, we favor discovering them in publication order rather than treating chronology as mandatory.

Find Jefferson White's audiobook

The English unabridged Audible edition credits Jefferson White and lists 12 hours 48 minutes. Scholastic separately confirms his role as narrator. Check both author and narrator: a study guide, a reaction video, and the complete novel are different products.

At 1×, its 768-minute runtime fits roughly 26 half-hour sessions. At 1.25×, the calculated listening time is about 10 hours 14 minutes, before pauses. These are planning estimates, not chapter boundaries. A chapter bookmark is more useful than remembering that you stopped “about halfway through today's session.”

For a library option, the OverDrive audiobook record identifies the Scholastic recording. That example is a particular library's catalog: search your own library for the title and narrator, then check availability and the loan period. Its presence in one catalog does not guarantee immediate access everywhere.

There is an official downloadable PDF worth having: Scholastic's twenty-page reading guide. It contains discussion material across the series. It is not the full novel, and its questions discuss story events, so save the relevant sections until you have read the book.

For the complete English ebook, Kobo's US listing gives ISBN 9781546171478 and EPUB 3 with Adobe DRM. You can use the retailer's preview before buying. The EPUB format label does not make this a freely transferable file; use supported authorized reading software for that purchase.

We have not verified an official free full-text PDF or EPUB of Sunrise on the Reaping. An audiobook sample is only a sample, and a retailer trial is subject to its own eligibility and renewal terms. Neither should be labeled a free permanent copy of the book.

Keep a spoiler boundary when you switch between reading and listening

Write your current book title and chapter at the top of your notes. Underneath, keep two short lines: “What I know so far” and “What I am wondering.” When returning after a break, replay your own notes with CastReader's free text-to-speech tool instead of searching a character's name and accidentally seeing later events.

For a legally obtained DRM-free EPUB, you can also use the CastReader EPUB reader. The protected Kobo edition above cannot be imported directly. CastReader does not supply the novel or reproduce Jefferson White's performance. Device voices are free without a CastReader account; CastReader AI voices require sign-in and have plan limits. EPUB files are parsed in the browser; cloud voices process the reading text remotely.

Use the download guide for device options. Local EPUB import is available through the web reader and supported mobile apps, not the browser extensions. If your next question is how to choose between named narrators and different productions, see our Harry Potter audiobook edition guide.
