For a first read, follow this sequence: The Housemaid → The Housemaid's Secret → The Housemaid's Wedding → The Housemaid Is Watching. The Wedding is a short story between the second and third novels, not a fourth full-length novel you must read afterward.
If you already finished the third novel, you have not ruined the short story: Freida McFadden also allows reading it at the end as a flashback. This guide separates the main novels from the extra story so you can choose the right next book without reading spoiler-filled sequel descriptions.

The Housemaid reading order, with the extra story marked
The author's FAQ supplies the chronological order below. Goodreads' series record labels the extra story as book 2.5, which explains why one store may show three books while another shows four items.
| Reading position | Title | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Housemaid | The first novel; start here if you are new to the series. |
| 2 | The Housemaid's Secret | The second novel. |
| 2.5 | The Housemaid's Wedding | A short story; read here for chronological order, or return to it after book 3. |
| 3 | The Housemaid Is Watching | The third novel. |
McFadden says the books can be read out of order but recommends the sequence because later books can reveal events from earlier ones. Our recommendation is therefore to begin with book 1 even if a sequel is currently easier to borrow. If avoiding spoilers matters, resist opening every sequel synopsis while deciding.
Is The Housemaid's Wedding necessary?
The author describes The Wedding as a winter-themed bonus story filling the gap between books 2 and 3. It is extra time with the characters, rather than a replacement for either novel.
Here are three practical ways to handle it:
- You are starting the series: save the order above and decide about the short story after book 2. There is no need to buy every installment immediately.
- You want only the main novels: follow books 1, 2, and 3. You can return to the bonus story later.
- You have already read The Housemaid Is Watching: read The Wedding as a flashback, an option the author explicitly permits. You do not need to restart the series.
Check a bundle's actual contents before checkout. “Three-book collection” generally identifies the three novels, but the seller's title alone is not enough to establish whether the short story is included. Look for each title in the description and compare against items you already own.
What are you getting into with the first book?
The premise is domestic suspense: Millie takes a live-in housekeeping job with the wealthy Winchester family, hoping for a fresh start. The apparently desirable household becomes increasingly unsettling. That is enough setup for a first read; the author's book page has more description if you want it.
Our suggested approach is to track what Millie can observe, what another person tells her, and what you have inferred yourself. Keep those categories separate rather than trying to solve the novel from a list of internet theories. A two-line note at a stopping point is more useful than a detailed character search that might reveal the ending.
For readers choosing a physical copy, Hachette's US trade paperback is ISBN 9781538742570, listed at 336 pages. A film cover, large-print edition, and ebook may have different identifiers or pagination. Match the format you want, not just the cover you recognize.
Prefer to listen? Start with the first recording
The author's audiobook listing credits Lauryn Allman, describes the recording as unabridged, and gives a runtime of 9 hours 46 minutes. Its retailer section links to Audible, Apple, Kobo, and other audio services. Those audio links do not establish that an English EPUB is sold by the same shops.
Listen to a sample before using a credit. If you read with a partner or book club, agree on a chapter stopping point; elapsed time differs when people choose different speeds. The series order remains the same whether you use print, ebook, or audio.
For a library copy, check your own catalog for the exact title and audio format. Local availability and lending rules vary. A paid subscription, a trial, and a library loan are different access arrangements, even when all are advertised alongside a “listen” button.
Can you get The Housemaid as a PDF or EPUB?
For the English ebook, the author's official book page points readers to Amazon and Kindle Unlimited, and her FAQ states that her ebooks are exclusive to Amazon. Follow those official links and check your region's current listing. Kindle Unlimited is a subscription option for eligible readers, not a freely downloadable EPUB.
We have not verified an official free complete PDF or EPUB of The Housemaid. We also have not verified an unrestricted downloadable EPUB of this English edition. Do not buy a Kindle copy on the assumption that it can be imported into another reader or that a TTS tool can remove DRM.
If you already use Kindle, our Kindle read-aloud and Audible comparison explains the distinction between reading text with a voice and buying a narrated recording. Choose a supported device and reading route before paying for an extra format.
Keep your place—and your theories—in your own words
After a session, note the last chapter you finished and one unresolved question. You can have CastReader read your own notes aloud before the next session, without pasting the novel into a tool.
For a legally obtained DRM-free EPUB you already own, the CastReader EPUB reader supports compatible files parsed in your browser. Free device voices require no account; CastReader AI voices require sign-in and have plan limits. This does not mean that a compatible Housemaid download is available, and CastReader does not provide or unlock the book. The download page lists supported device options; extensions do not import local EPUB files.
If you are choosing between this series and another suspense novel, our Verity edition guide focuses on a different buying question: whether a particular edition includes additional final-chapter material.
