What would it mean to experience centuries of life while leaving almost no place in anyone else's memory? That question is a useful companion to The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. Before trying to explain every rule of Addie's bargain, watch the ordinary things it makes difficult: a meeting, a name, the expectation that tomorrow's conversation can build on today's.
For the text itself, Digital Downloads Ohio lists the complete English EPUB, ISBN 9780765387585, for eligible library borrowers. If you want a file to keep and use in a compatible reader, Kobo's US edition offers the paid, complete DRM-free EPUB 3 under that ISBN. The store link leads to purchase; the file download follows in your account.

A complete EPUB you can keep, and what is actually free
The Tor publisher listing explicitly identifies this ebook as sold without DRM. Kobo separately confirms English, EPUB 3 (DRM-Free), ISBN 9780765387585, released October 6, 2020. This is a specific edition claim, not an assumption about every Schwab ebook or every store.
If you purchase the matching Kobo edition, the official export route is My Account → My Books → the book's Actions menu → Download → Download file. Check your actual country's listing and its format before buying. A subscription trial displayed on the same store page is a separate offer; do not assume it grants a permanent export of the purchased edition.
For no-cost access, begin with a library for which you have borrowing eligibility. The Digital Downloads Ohio record offers EPUB and browser reading, subject to availability and loan conditions. A retail DRM-free policy does not remove library authorization, expiry or supported-reader requirements.
There are also two useful free publisher resources:
- Open Read Excerpt on Tor's book page to try the prose before committing. It is a sample of the novel.
- Save the official one-page reading-group PDF for discussion after reading. It contains questions and spoilers, not the novel's full text.
We have not verified an authorized, publicly downloadable complete free English EPUB or PDF as of October 26, 2026. The publisher-linked Kindle ebook is another purchase option, but we have not verified EPUB export for that version. The checks here cover listings and instructions; we have not bought, borrowed or imported the full book.
Use dates and places as anchors, rather than solving the timeline
The publisher's premise begins with France in 1714: Addie seeks a different life and makes a bargain whose cost is being forgotten. Nearly three centuries later, a young man in a bookstore remembers her. Let that be enough advance plot knowledge. The experience of reading lies partly in learning what the apparent rules permit and what they cost her over time.
Keep a bookmark note with just date, place and the relationship currently in view. When the narrative changes period, update those three items. Do not reorder the novel into a chronological summary before reading it. The contrast between a later situation and an earlier choice can carry meaning that a tidy timeline removes.
A second, optional note can track a trace Addie leaves: an image, an idea, an impression or a moment that matters to someone else. Ask whether a person must remember its source for that trace to have value. This is a reading question, not a rule you need to prove in every chapter.
For a discussion partner, choose one scene involving an ordinary practical problem and another involving art or recognition. Compare what each tells you about independence. The contrast gives you more to talk about than whether you personally would accept immortality.
If that interest in art and a life extended beyond ordinary limits stays with you, The Picture of Dorian Gray provides a shorter comparison and a complete free English EPUB. It is a different story with a different moral pressure, and no background reading is required for Addie.
The prose is part of the decision
This is a book for which enthusiasm about the premise does not guarantee enthusiasm about the pace. Melanie's Goodreads review responds strongly to its emotional longing and questions about leaving a mark. Cindy Pham's review admires the writing while explaining why its slower, inward focus may feel repetitive to someone who does not connect with the characters.
That divide persists in a recent October 26, 2026 review by Melody Draper, who remained engaged but did not find the payoff she hoped for. These are individual reactions, not evidence that one response is correct. They make the publisher excerpt especially useful: try a few pages for the sentences and emotional attention, not only for what happens next.
Allow space for ambiguity in the relationships. Wanting to be seen, wanting to be free and trusting the person who offers either are different questions. You can be interested in a character's decision without approving it. That distinction often makes a richer book-club conversation than sorting everyone into good and bad partners.
Turn a compatible copy into a focused TTS reading
Once you have the complete DRM-free EPUB you are entitled to use, open CastReader's EPUB workspace and select the file. Check the title and contents, choose the first narrative section or your saved chapter, and keep its date and place visible. The workspace parses EPUB locally; importing a file does not mean every voice operates locally.
A device voice is free without an account where available. AI voices require sign-in and follow plan limits; cloud voices send reading text for speech generation. A library loan should stay within its permitted reader and lending workflow. If you bought the Kindle edition, use CastReader downloads and the Kindle reading-page route instead of assuming an EPUB export.
Try one chapter at a comfortable pace before choosing a longer session. Pause when the time or location changes, and check your three-part bookmark note. If a sentence draws your attention, return to it on screen rather than increasing speed to get through the next section. This is guidance for reading with TTS, not a claim that we have tested the complete novel or recreated its commercial audiobook.
At the end of a session, keep one question about what a character wanted to preserve. It gives you a reason to return that is more personal than a percentage-complete counter.
