You can open the complete French text of Albert Camus's The Plague (La Peste) without an account or a book purchase. Read the full HTML here, or download the complete French EPUB. These links are from Ebooks libres et gratuits. Use them where the work is in the public domain; the site's book record flags country restrictions.
Want English? The free file above is French, not an English translation. Below you will find a library EPUB option, a paid DRM-free English collection for eligible countries, and a separately identified protected English edition. We have not verified an openly downloadable, free, complete English EPUB.
Prefer Chinese? Open 鼠疫 on WeRead. This is a Chinese reading page, with access governed by WeRead, rather than a downloadable EPUB. See the Chinese reading route below.
The novel is worth approaching as more than a story about an epidemic. A city loses its ordinary freedoms, and its residents must decide what they owe one another. You can begin with that question; you do not need a philosophy course before the first page.
The shortest route: install, open the text, listen
Start with the original French text
Open the complete La Peste HTML →
Already installed? Go straight to the text and open CastReader. Using another browser or a phone? Choose your CastReader download.
Step 1 — Install CastReader in your desktop browser. The first button goes directly to its official Chrome Web Store listing. After installation, return to the book tab and reload it if the extension is not yet available there.
Step 2 — Open the full text and find Part I. The HTML contains all five parts on one page. Choose I in its contents to start at the beginning. If the reader remembers an earlier position, move back to the opening passage rather than assuming the first Play action will reset the book.
Step 3 — Open CastReader and use a French voice. In Chrome, open the Extensions menu and choose CastReader, or use its pinned icon. Start or resume from the passage you want to hear, keeping the text visible. Pause when you want to reread a sentence. Selecting an English voice does not translate the French novel into English.
We checked this HTML page with CastReader in Mac Chrome on October 9, 2026: the reading controls appeared, a French voice was selected, and the browser reported audio playback with a highlighted French passage. That is a short page-reading check, not a claim that the entire novel or every device has been tested.
The book text is free in eligible regions. CastReader cloud AI voices require an account and follow plan limits. For a route using a free device voice without a CastReader account, use the EPUB option below.
Save the French EPUB and use a device voice
Download La Peste in French as an EPUB. This is the novel, not a discussion guide, sample, or audiobook. We downloaded the file and checked its French language metadata, reading contents, and absence of an encrypted-content manifest. If the direct link changes, the catalog page provides the EPUB choice again.
Open the CastReader EPUB reader, select the downloaded file, and choose an available French device voice. The book is parsed locally in your browser. Device voices need no CastReader account; their availability and sound depend on your browser and operating system. Cloud voices instead send reading text for remote voice processing and have account and plan requirements.
Keep the text alongside the narration for the first few paragraphs. If no French device voice is listed, you can still read the EPUB silently, use another supported device with a French voice, or choose a cloud voice within your plan. Do not select a paid voice expecting it to be the free device option.
On a phone, the download page links to CastReader's mobile apps. For local files, use the web EPUB reader or a supported mobile app; browser extensions are for webpages and do not import EPUB files. Saving an EPUB gives you a reusable text file, but it does not guarantee offline cloud narration or create an MP3.
English EPUB options
An English translation is a separate edition with its own rights. Here are specific routes, in the order to check if you want to avoid buying unnecessarily.
Borrow an English EPUB through a participating library. Pikes Peak Library District's OverDrive record lists Laura Marris's translation in English as an EPUB ebook, alongside other reading formats. It requires an eligible library account; availability, holds, borrowing periods, and download protection apply. If you are not a member, search your own library for ISBN 9780593318676. A library listing is not a public download, and a protected loan cannot be directly imported into CastReader.
Get a downloadable, DRM-free English EPUB where the publisher permits sales. Delphi Classics' Albert Camus collection includes The Plague among its translated novels and offers an ePub edition. This is a paid collection, not a free standalone novel. The publisher restricts sales by country, including availability in Canada and China; it is not an unrestricted US or UK offer. Check the location notice before buying.
Delphi states that purchases directly from its store provide DRM-free EPUB downloads, accessed through My Account after purchase. Choose ePub, download the file from your account, then select The Plague in the collection's contents. A compatible, unprotected EPUB is the appropriate format for CastReader's file reader. We verified the publisher's listing and download policy, but have not bought or import-tested this particular collection.
Choose a separate modern English edition if that is your priority. Kobo's Laura Marris translation is English EPUB 3, ISBN 9780593318676, with Adobe DRM. It is a purchase page; read the purchased book in a compatible authorized reader. Its EPUB label does not make it a direct CastReader import. Availability and price depend on your storefront.
If you are comparing a French original with an English version, align by part and opening sentence, not page number. Translations, introductions, font sizes, and file layouts can all shift the pagination. You also do not need to buy two translations before deciding whether the novel interests you.

Read the Chinese edition on WeRead
Open 鼠疫 by Albert Camus on WeRead →
This link goes straight to the book's web reader. The page identifies the author as [法]阿尔贝·加缪 and offers a contents menu containing the introduction, five parts, and a translator's afterword. Use 目录 → 第一部 to find the beginning of the novel; the initial landing page may show copyright information instead.
If you already read in WeRead, this can be a convenient Chinese alternative to downloading a file. Sign in and obtain any access the platform requires, open an available chapter in your desktop browser, then use CastReader with a Chinese voice. Our WeRead listening guide explains the supported webpage route. Move to the next chapter in WeRead when needed.
WeRead controls which text your account can access. CastReader does not unlock restricted chapters, and this link does not provide an EPUB export. We verified the book page and contents; we have not established that this Chinese edition is free in full for every reader.
What to notice before you press Play
Published in French in 1947, the novel follows an epidemic in Oran, Algeria. The opening moves from disruptions that people can dismiss toward a shared emergency they cannot. Camus is interested in what happens between recognizing suffering and deciding to do something about it. The Camus Society's introduction gives useful background for readers who want more context.
You can keep the principal figures straight with a few simple associations: Rieux is the doctor; Tarrou watches and records; Rambert is the journalist caught away from the life he wants; Grand is a municipal clerk; Paneloux is the priest. Listen for how they explain their choices, not just for the next development in the epidemic. This is a book in which an ordinary task or a conversation can carry as much weight as a dramatic event.
Reader responses suggest two reasonable expectations. Petra's Goodreads review praises the relationship between the novel's pace and its changing atmosphere. Emma's review describes a more mixed response to encountering its philosophical epidemic story after COVID. A recent October 8, 2026 review by Clihh values the way different characters embody responses to Camus's ideas. These are individual readings, not a promise that everyone will find the book uplifting or fast-moving.
For a first session, try 15–20 minutes at a comfortable speed and stop at a paragraph break. Ask one question: Who has noticed that ordinary life is changing, and who is still acting as though it is not? Next time, return to your last paragraph and listen for how that answer changes. The five parts are not equal-length daily assignments, so there is no need to force one part per sitting.
If you are reading French as a learner, replay a short passage while following the words before looking up unfamiliar vocabulary. For a first encounter with the story in English, use an English edition instead of relying on an English voice to pronounce French. In either language, TTS helps you stay with the text; interpretation still comes from attending to the choices and conversations in it.
A few answers that prevent the wrong download
Is The Plague on Project Gutenberg? We did not find a verified Camus The Plague download in the main Project Gutenberg catalog. Other books with “plague” in their titles are different works. The free French links in this article come from Ebooks libres et gratuits, not Gutenberg.
Is the book copyright-free everywhere? No. Country and translation matter. The source's rights guidance explains why a file being online does not establish permission in every country. An English translator's rights also do not disappear merely because the French original is public domain somewhere. Follow the source's location restrictions when choosing a file.
Is there a free English PDF instead? We have not verified an authorized, openly downloadable complete English PDF or EPUB. A sample, a reading guide, and a full novel are different things. The English library and publisher links above are the routes we could substantiate.
The voice is reading the contents rather than the story. Pause, move to the opening of Part I, and start from the passage you want. If the webpage is awkward on your device, use the French EPUB and its contents in the file reader. Keep a short location note rather than assuming that two different readers share a bookmark.
Ready to begin? Get CastReader for your device, then open the complete French HTML. Prefer a file? Download the French EPUB and open it in the EPUB reader.
