You can download the complete English Wuthering Heights without buying an ebook. The Standard Ebooks edition and Project Gutenberg's ebook No. 768 both provide the novel. These are public-domain sources in the United States; check the position in your country if you live elsewhere.
The harder part is often knowing who is speaking. Emily Brontë gives you a visitor who misunderstands the household, a housekeeper telling its history, and names that recur across generations. Before looking up a family tree that reveals the whole plot, use the small set of bearings below. You can enjoy the book's intensity without solving every relationship on the first page.
Get the full novel, then keep the edition consistent
Download the compatible EPUB from Standard Ebooks for a general EPUB reading app. The source page also separates its Kindle and Kobo device formats, so use the file intended for your reader. The EPUB download page starts the transfer automatically.
Download Project Gutenberg's EPUB 3 if you prefer that edition. Its catalog page also offers the complete online text and other formats. No account or subscription is required for these downloads.
We downloaded both EPUBs on October 7, 2026, checked their English-language metadata and chapter contents, and found no encrypted-content manifest. The novel has 34 chapters. These files contain the book rather than a sample, discussion worksheet, or modern retelling. They do not give you the introduction and annotations from every commercial edition.
EPUB is usually the useful choice for reading on a small screen: text can reflow as you enlarge it. A PDF preserves a page layout instead. If a class assigns a particular printed edition, follow its pagination; use chapter numbers when comparing a free EPUB with someone else's copy.

Start with two houses and two storytellers
The first chapter places Lockwood in 1801. He is renting Thrushcross Grange and visits his landlord, Heathcliff, at Wuthering Heights. Lockwood's confident first impressions are a poor substitute for knowing these people. When his guesses fail, that is part of the introduction, not evidence that you missed an explanatory chapter.
Nelly Dean, also called Ellen or Mrs. Dean, supplies much of the older family history. She has lived inside these households and participated in their lives. Her account brings knowledge that Lockwood lacks, but it also brings her own judgments.
Keep this short reference nearby:
| Name or place | Useful bearing for the opening |
|---|---|
| Wuthering Heights | Heathcliff's house when Lockwood arrives; the name describes its exposed, stormy setting. |
| Thrushcross Grange | The house Lockwood rents; a separate location, not another name for the Heights. |
| Lockwood | The visiting tenant whose account introduces the household. |
| Nelly / Ellen / Mrs. Dean | Different forms of the same housekeeper's name. |
| Earnshaw and Linton | Family names to keep distinct as Nelly's history unfolds. |
In Chapter 3, the variations of Catherine's name written around the window are supposed to trouble Lockwood. Resist assigning a new character to each surname immediately. Let Chapter 4 establish more of the relationships, and add names to your notes only as the text identifies them. A full online family tree can disclose events you have not reached.
A useful margin note is simply “Who is telling this, and did they witness it?” Apply it to both narrators. You need not decide that either person is always truthful or always mistaken to notice the limits of what each can know.
The love story can be powerful without being comforting
A reader expecting a reassuring romance may feel ambushed by the hostility. The novel is concerned with attachment, humiliation, class, property, and the ways adults pass injury on to others. Admiring the writing does not require treating cruelty as proof of devotion.
That expectation gap appears in the Goodreads reviews. Larissa's review describes frustration with the gulf between an anticipated romance and the characters' destructive behavior. Emily May values the atmosphere and intensity without needing likable people. A recent October 7 response from Altynai admires the language while finding some developments melodramatic. These are individual readings, not a consensus about what you must feel.
Try asking which action changes a person's options: who controls a home, who is excluded, who can leave, and who has to stay. That gives an argument between characters more substance than deciding which person you would want to be friends with.
The opening also contains dialect, nested speech, and older sentence patterns. Read Joseph's dialogue for its situation and tone before stopping over every spelling. If a voice mispronounces the dialect, return to the visible text; synthetic pronunciation is not an authoritative explanation of the language.
A listening habit that keeps the narrators separate
With a downloaded DRM-free file, open the CastReader EPUB reader. Choose an available on-device voice for free reading without a CastReader account. The file is parsed locally. Choosing a cloud AI voice requires sign-in and uses the relevant plan allowance; the reading text is then sent for remote voice processing.
For the first few chapters, keep the text visible while listening. At a change of narrator, pause long enough to name the speaker and the period being described. Save a note such as “Chapter 4 — Nelly begins the family history.” That is more useful when you return than remembering only a progress percentage.
Try one chapter with the text and voice together, then decide whether listening helps with the prose. TTS does not automatically assign an actor to each person or make the family relationships explicit. It can give you another way to attend to a sentence while you retain the text for names, dialogue boundaries, and rereading.
If you are building a small classic-reading shelf, our Frankenstein edition guide explains a different choice: why its 1818 and 1831 texts are not interchangeable. For Wuthering Heights, begin with one complete edition and let its narrators introduce their world in order.
