Download the complete English EPUB of The Turn of the Screw or start the full HTML text at the opening frame. Both are Project Gutenberg’s edition of Henry James’s novella. You do not need to buy a study guide, join a library or sign up for a trial to use these files.
To listen straight from the page, get CastReader, open the HTML link, and check that the Christmas Eve storytelling frame is visible before starting. To read from a file, download the EPUB and select it in the EPUB workspace. The frame comes before Chapter I; starting at Chapter I skips part of the way James introduces the story.

A short book that rewards a slower first reading
A young governess takes responsibility for two children at an isolated estate. What she sees, what she suspects and what she can persuade another person to accept do not always line up. That tension is a better starting point than deciding in advance which explanation of the story is correct.
The novella’s length can be misleading. James often puts several qualifications inside a sentence. You may reach the end of a paragraph while still working out exactly what the speaker has agreed to. A short session with the text visible can be more satisfying than racing through an uninterrupted audio track.
Instead of searching for an ending explanation, try this: after a scene, write one thing reported as an observation and one conclusion someone draws from it. If you cannot separate them yet, leave the note unfinished. The aim is to keep track of uncertainty, not to solve the book before it has finished speaking.
What is in the free download?
Project Gutenberg ebook 209 supplies the complete English text, including the opening frame and Chapters I–XXIV. We downloaded the EPUB, checked its English metadata, contents and text files, and found no EPUB encryption file. This was a file check, not a full-book playback test.
The source identifies the work as public domain in the United States. Readers elsewhere should check local rules. No purchase or account is required for this Gutenberg download. It is the original narrative, not a modern commentary, a television tie-in or an abridged retelling.
The HTML is equally useful if you do not want to manage a file. Its contents let you return to individual chapters, while the opening link above deliberately targets the earlier frame. If a browser or reader restores an old position, return to the contents and choose the opening before pressing Play. A deep link and a saved reading position are different things.
We verified the EPUB and HTML routes here, not a separate PDF edition. The reflowable EPUB is the more convenient choice if you want adjustable text size rather than fixed page images.
Keep the storytellers separate
You first encounter a gathering listening to a story. Douglas introduces the manuscript; the governess’s account then becomes the main narrative. Give yourself a moment at that transition. An audio voice may sound the same on both sides even though the source of the account has changed.
You only need a small cast note at the start:
- The governess: the person whose account you will spend most of your time following.
- Miles and Flora: the children in her care.
- Mrs. Grose: the housekeeper, an important partner in conversations about the household.
There is no need to look up the other names before the story introduces them. Character searches often disclose exactly the information a first reader is supposed to discover gradually.
When a conversation feels difficult, ask a narrower question than “What does this mean?” Try “What question was asked, and was it actually answered?” That works especially well when a character’s confidence seems to grow faster than the evidence you can identify.
Why some readers love it and others stop
In the Goodreads reviews checked on October 16, 2026, Jeffrey Keeten valued the uncertainty around the danger. Justin Tate found that ambiguity frustrating and the characters’ motivations unconvincing. These are contrasting personal readings, not a consensus.
Recent English reviews also brought the practical reading difficulty into focus: one reader found the long sentences exhausting, while another used an audiobook alongside the text after coming from The Haunting of Bly Manor. That is a reason to try a supported reading method, not a promise that narration will make every sentence clear. The Goodreads book page lets you explore those responses; avoid spoiler-marked reviews until you finish.
The free opening makes the decision inexpensive. If you enjoy uncertainty but struggle with the syntax, try reading and listening together. If you need a fast-moving ghost story with explicit answers, know that the very quality other readers admire may be what frustrates you.
A useful CastReader session is one you can pause
In the HTML text, begin at the opening frame. In the EPUB workspace, select the downloaded file and locate the opening before Chapter I. Watch the first highlighted passage to confirm the starting point. We verified the source file and links; we have not claimed continuous playback of every chapter on every device.
Choose a device voice for account-free reading. CastReader AI voices require sign-in and have plan limits. EPUB parsing happens locally in the web workspace; selecting a cloud voice sends reading text to the speech service. This unencrypted Gutenberg file is different from a protected store or library EPUB.
Keep the text visible during dense dialogue. If a sentence becomes unclear, pause at its end, identify the speaker, and reread the clause that supplies the main action. Increasing the speed to “get through” a confusing passage usually makes that task harder. There is no single correct listening speed.
Stop at a chapter boundary and leave yourself a brief location note. On returning, use the contents to find that chapter rather than assuming the player will restore the exact line. After finishing, compare your observation notes with your first interpretation. That second look is where the book’s compact form becomes an advantage: you can revisit a crucial conversation without rereading a large novel.
