You do not need to collect every edition of The Love Hypothesis to begin Olive and Adam’s story. The novel, the author’s newsletter extras and the collector’s edition are different offers. Start with the main book; decide whether you want another perspective after you know what you liked about it.
The most useful free-access lead is this English EPUB library edition, ISBN 9780593336830. It requires an eligible Library Connection library card and an available loan. Separately, Ali Hazelwood’s official bonus-scene page offers access to two Adam POV chapters in exchange for a newsletter signup. Those scenes are extras, not a free copy of the novel, and they are not an openly downloadable full EPUB.

What is in each offer?
| You want… | Use this source | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The complete English ebook through a library | Library Connection’s EPUB record | Card eligibility, holds, loan period and the library’s download instructions. EPUB borrowing is not an unrestricted permanent file. |
| A purchased English EPUB | The Love Hypothesis on Kobo | The checked edition is EPUB 3 with Adobe DRM, ISBN 9780593336830. Account, payment and regional availability apply; this is a purchase page. |
| Adam’s additional viewpoint scenes | The author’s official signup | Newsletter registration is required. We verified the offer, not the contents or file format delivered after signup. |
| A physical collector’s edition | Berkley’s edition dated June 10, 2025 | ISBN 9780593953815, 416 pages; the publisher lists a bonus chapter about the kiss from Adam’s viewpoint, plus special design features. Do not assume those extras are included in a standard EPUB. |
We did not verify a public, free full English EPUB or PDF of the novel. A preview, a bonus scene and a complete novel are not interchangeable. An Adobe-protected purchase or library loan also cannot be imported into CastReader as an ordinary EPUB; an ACSM file is an authorization file, not a substitute for the book. We did not purchase, borrow or sign up on a reader’s behalf.
Suggested order: read the main novel first, then open the bonus material. Reading an alternate viewpoint midway can explain feelings that the original viewpoint is still leaving uncertain. If that uncertainty is part of the pleasure for you, preserve it. You do not need the collector’s edition before starting the story.
The experiment is romantic; the stakes are also professional
In Hazelwood’s official introduction, Olive Smith is a third-year PhD candidate who improvises a fake relationship with professor Adam Carlsen. A scientific conference brings professional pressures into the romantic setup. Expect a trope-forward contemporary romance in an academic setting, rather than a detailed account of how a research lab operates.
Three relationships make the opening easier to follow: Olive and Anh, the friend she wants to convince; Olive and Adam, the person involved in the arrangement; and Olive’s relationship with her own future in science. When she makes a decision that seems unnecessarily indirect, ask which of those relationships she thinks she is protecting.
That question is useful even when the answer annoys you. You can enjoy the chemistry while wishing someone would ask a direct question. Conversely, a familiar romantic device may become more interesting when it intersects with career uncertainty. Keeping those reactions separate is a better guide to your taste than deciding whether the book is objectively “too tropey.”
The illustrated cover should not be mistaken for a young-reader content rating. The author’s content notes include explicit sexual content, workplace sexual harassment, and past parental death from cancer. The central relationship also involves a student/professor power difference. Consult those notes before choosing the book for a group or shared listening.
The reader disagreement that helps you choose
Yun’s review enjoys the humor and the academic setting. James is much less patient with its communication problems. A recent October 13 review by KT Smith combines affection for Olive with frustration about communication and a slower start. These examples show contrasting preferences; they do not establish how every reader will respond.
Before committing, read a sample and ask whether you enjoy Olive’s internal commentary as much as the premise. If that voice works for you, familiar plot devices may feel like welcome promises. If you want fast, straightforward conversation between the leads, the same devices can feel like delays.
For a discussion after finishing, compare what Olive knows with what she assumes at one important decision. Then, if you have chosen to access the official extras, ask whether Adam’s viewpoint changes your interpretation of the scene or simply confirms it. That gives the bonus material a purpose beyond accumulating more pages.
Choose a listening route without repurchasing the wrong edition
The checked Kobo EPUB uses Adobe DRM. Read it with Kobo’s supported tools, or use the library’s reading and accessibility options for a loan. CastReader does not unlock either file. If you instead have authorized access to a Kindle edition, the CastReader Kindle workflow uses supported rendered book pages rather than requiring a local EPUB export. The library record above lists Kindle Book, but eligibility and availability still depend on your library and region.
For an independently obtained, compatible DRM-free EPUB that you have permission to use, the CastReader EPUB reader is the direct import route. We have not verified a DRM-free retail version of this title. Do not purchase the listed Adobe DRM edition just to use that tool. Use CastReader downloads to choose a supported app or desktop webpage-reading extension; the Chrome, Edge and Firefox extensions cannot import local EPUB files.
While listening, pause at a change in location or a new academic relationship and check who is speaking. A short paragraph at ordinary speed is a better starting point than trying to hurry through the misunderstanding that drives a scene. If you want a no-login test of a device voice first, use the free text reader with a short passage you are entitled to use.
Available device voices in the web reader require no account. CastReader AI requires an account and has plan limits. Local EPUB parsing happens in the browser; cloud voices send reading text to the service. TTS is a synthetic reading aid, not the commercially produced audiobook performance.
