The author's introduction supplies the premise without requiring an ending summary.
That setup offers three useful questions to carry into the book. When is breaking a rule an act of care? Can protecting someone become a way of deciding for them? What would it mean to build a future when your work keeps bringing you to other people's endings? These are starting questions, not claims about how the novel answers them.
Consider this book if you are drawn to supernatural jobs, romantic friction, and characters whose responsibilities complicate their feelings. The title alone can sound like a horror novel; the author's presentation centers the romance. Sample the opening if you want to judge the balance of humor, emotion, and fantasy for yourself.
Should you read Good Spirits first?
For a first visit to this series, publication order is the simplest choice: Good Spirits, then Grim Tidings. It avoids having to research a chronology that might reveal connections you would rather discover while reading.
They introduce different central couples. Good Spirits begins with Nolan Callahan, the Ghost of Christmas Past, and Harriet York, the person he is sent to haunt. Grim Tidings centers Darcy and Gabriel. You are choosing another relationship within the named series, rather than buying a renamed edition of the first book.
