With Alchemised, a detailed explanation of “what is really going on” can remove the very uncertainty you came to experience. Go in knowing the premise and the tone; let the book supply the missing history. The useful preparation is deciding whether you want this kind of story, choosing a manageable format, and finding a way to return after a break without searching for spoilers.
The setup you can know safely
Helena Marino is a captive after a devastating war, with crucial memories missing. Her enemies doubt that the surviving records tell the full story of her importance. Their effort to recover what she knows places her in the custody of the High Reeve, in a world shaped by alchemy and necromancy. That is the starting situation described by the official book site, rather than a summary of where the story ends.
The appeal of that premise is the tension between identity and evidence: who are you when other people possess records of your life that you cannot fully confirm? If you like reconstructing a past from incomplete information, this gives you a reason to turn pages beyond simply waiting for the next romantic development.
Decide on tone before committing to the length
SenLinYu describes the novel as dark fantasy concerned with war and survival. The author's content notes include severe violence, torture, sexual assault, and trauma. Read that page if specific material affects your choice. A romance recommendation alone does not communicate the book's full subject matter.
The author also identifies a third-person limited viewpoint, where events can be misunderstood or missed. That is a useful reading instruction: a character's explanation is information to consider, not automatically a complete account. You do not have to solve every ambiguity immediately.

How much time are you signing up for?
The US publisher's edition record lists a 1,040-page hardcover and an audiobook narrated by Saskia Maarleveld, running 36 hours 15 minutes. Page counts belong to editions; a different printing or ebook screen will not necessarily match that number.
For planning, that audio runtime is about 73 half-hour sessions at normal speed, rounded up, before pauses. At 1.5× it is approximately 24 hours 10 minutes of playback. These are calculations from the published runtime, not a recommendation to rush or a promise about how long you will take.
If a book club has a date in mind, work backwards from it. Leave space for a missed day and the final discussion. A long book becomes easier to approach when “read tonight” means one planned session, not catching up with a thousand pages at once.
Keep a three-line note instead of opening a wiki
Try this small reading log at the end of a session:
Known: one thing the current passage directly establishes.
Reported: one claim another character makes about the past.
Unresolved: one question you want to carry forward, with a chapter reference.
This is our suggested method, not a glossary supplied by the novel. The separation matters: your own theory should not quietly turn into a fact in your notes. On returning, read these three lines and a paragraph around your stopping point. Avoid character-name searches until you finish if you want to protect the mystery.
For a group discussion, agree on a chapter boundary and ask everyone to explain what evidence was available at that point. It is a more useful conversation than letting the fastest reader confirm or dismiss everybody's theories.
