Threshing Day: EPUB Access and When to Read the 13 Stories

If you finished Onyx Storm and are looking for the next part of Violet's story, Threshing Day is a different kind of return to the Empyrean. Rebecca Yarros has written a collection of thirteen stories about the dragon-bonding trial, rather than the fourth main novel. Her official purchase page even labels it “Not Book Four”.

For an English EPUB, first check this library ebook record. It offers a borrowing route for eligible members. If borrowing is unavailable, Kobo's English edition is a paid EPUB with Adobe DRM. We did not verify a free, publicly downloadable complete EPUB or PDF; a request thread or a filename alone does not establish that a file is the full authorized book.

Get the EPUB without confusing a loan with a download you own

The Abilene Public Library OverDrive record identifies the full English ebook, ISBN 9781682818527, with an EPUB ebook format. You need an eligible library card, an available copy or a hold, and the library's authorized download workflow. The loan expires and may use access protection. If you belong to a different library, search its catalog using that ISBN or open the specific Libby title to check your libraries.

That is the first option to try before paying. It is not an account-free file, and a protected library EPUB cannot simply be uploaded into CastReader.

The purchase fallback is Threshing Day on Kobo. The US listing specifies English, Entangled Publishing, September 29, 2026, and EPUB 3 (Adobe DRM). Use an eligible store account and a compatible authorized reader. If the download produces an ACSM file, that is an authorization file for obtaining the protected ebook, not the novel itself. Changing its extension to .epub will not make it readable.

If you prefer Kindle, use the retailer choices on Yarros's official book page. Buying access in Kindle is a separate route; we have not verified an EPUB export option for this particular edition. The library record also lists Kindle Book, subject to the options available to your account.

Read it after Onyx Storm, even though it returns to earlier events

The publisher's synopsis on Kobo explicitly recommends reading this collection after Onyx Storm because it contains spoilers. An earlier event in the fictional timeline does not necessarily make a safe starting point for a new reader.

The useful order is:

  1. Fourth Wing — meet the college, its rules, and its central relationships.
  2. Iron Flame — continue the main story.
  3. Onyx Storm — finish the third main novel.
  4. Threshing Day — return for the additional perspectives.

If you are still deciding how to start, our Fourth Wing edition guide compares listening options. If your next purchase is the third novel, the Onyx Storm audio guide explains standard narration and split dramatized editions. Those are different format decisions from buying this collection.

For Threshing Day, avoid character-specific review threads until you have read the story concerned. A review can reveal who appears or what a dragon's choice means even when it does not discuss the ending of a main novel.

What makes the collection worth your time?

The central attraction is another person's experience of a defining trial. That makes this a better fit for someone who wants more time with the cast than someone seeking a full novel's forward momentum.

The Goodreads responses we read show that distinction clearly. Yana's October 2 review enjoys the perspectives while wishing for more. Krista's September 29 review finds individual moments rewarding but is less persuaded by the amount of new material. These are individual reactions, not a representative survey. Both reviews may contain spoilers.

Before buying, ask yourself which experience you want: a continuation of the unresolved main plot, or a closer look at people whose choices you already care about? If it is the first, a library loan may be the sensible way to sample this detour. If it is the second, the short-story format can make one character's account a satisfying reading session.

A simple note at each story's end is more useful than an elaborate theory spreadsheet: What did this person fear? What did they believe would earn a bond? What changed? Keep your answer separate from information you already know from later novels. That preserves the difference between a character's knowledge and your own.

Listening one perspective at a time

TTS works best here when you keep the story heading visible and stop at the next perspective change. Check an unfamiliar name in the text rather than treating a synthetic voice as an official pronunciation guide. The author's series content notice flags violence, death, strong language, and sexual content; choose your listening setting accordingly.

If your authorized Kindle copy opens on read.amazon.com, the CastReader Kindle guide explains the desktop Chrome or Edge route. Install CastReader, open the readable book page, and begin with a short passage. CastReader uses local OCR on the rendered Kindle page and sends reading text to its voice service. It does not download or decrypt the book. This edition has not received a book-specific playback test, so check the opening and continuation before settling into a long session.

An authorized DRM-free file, if you obtain one separately, belongs in the CastReader EPUB reader. The protected Kobo and library editions above are not direct-import files. In the web EPUB tool, available device voices are free without an account; cloud AI voices require sign-in and follow plan limits. TTS is synthetic reading of text, not the separately produced commercial audiobook.

Source and access details checked October 10, 2026. No purchase, library loan, EPUB export, or complete-book playback was performed.
