Two recordings called Fourth Wing can offer very different evenings. One lets you settle into a narrator's reading; another puts dialogue, music, and effects around you. For a first listen alongside the ebook, start by sampling the unabridged narrated edition. For a performed soundscape, sample GraphicAudio's dramatized adaptation—and check that you are getting both parts.
This guide helps you choose the format before you buy. It does not reveal the ending, dragon bonds, or later-book developments.
First, is this the kind of fantasy you want?
Violet Sorrengail expects a future among books but is sent into training for dragon riders instead. She enters a dangerous military college where physical survival, competition, and attraction complicate one another. The publisher's ebook listing introduces that premise and identifies it as Book 1 of the Empyrean series.
Consider it if the combination of a school under pressure, an underestimated protagonist, dragons, and adult romance appeals to you. The romance and danger are part of the proposition; a dragon on the cover does not make this a children's adventure. Before buying a long recording, try the opening sample and decide whether you want to spend time inside Violet's immediate, high-pressure perspective.

The Audible edition credits Rebecca Soler and Teddy Hamilton. Its current description also mentions added bonus chapters. Check the listing and your library's download version instead of assuming that an older review describes the recording available now.
GraphicAudio's Part 1 product page identifies a dramatized adaptation with a full cast, effects, and music. It lists Khaya Fraites as Violet and Gabriel Michael as Xaden. Its description places bonus chapters in Part 2. Use the publisher's Empyrean series page to locate the matching second part.
An adaptation may express something through performance or sound instead of matching the printed wording. Choose the narrated edition when following sentences closely matters to you. Choose drama because you like its sample, not because a shorter running time must mean it is the same recording played faster.
A five-minute listening comparison
Open the sample for each edition using the headphones or speaker you normally use. Listen for three things: whether you can distinguish speakers, whether background sound helps or competes for your attention, and whether you enjoy the narration during quieter explanation as much as during dialogue.
For commuting, try this at your normal listening volume. For reading along, place your ebook beside the sample and check how easily you can find your position. You do not have to adopt someone else's favorite version: sound design that feels immersive to one listener can be distracting to another.

Reading order and a spoiler-light starting note
The three main novels currently listed are Fourth Wing → Iron Flame → Onyx Storm. Follow that order. “Part 2” on GraphicAudio's Fourth Wing is the second portion of Book 1, not Iron Flame. That distinction prevents an especially frustrating mid-story purchase mistake.
For your first sessions, keep a short note with name, role, and the chapter where you met them. Fill it in yourself rather than opening a character wiki: a seemingly harmless search can reveal later allegiances or outcomes. Stop at a chapter boundary, and keep the edition name with your timestamp if you switch recordings.
