Onyx Storm is the third Empyrean novel: read Fourth Wing, then Iron Flame, then Onyx Storm. When an audio store calls it “Part 1 of 2,” that means the first half of one adaptation of book three. It does not mean the first book in the series.
There are two separate decisions here: whether you are ready for the story, and which audio product you want. This guide keeps those decisions apart and avoids revealing how Onyx Storm ends.

Coming back after Iron Flame? Make a small restart note
Rebecca Yarros continues Violet Sorrengail's story as she travels beyond familiar territory in search of allies. The publisher-supplied description and reading order on Kobo make clear that this is a continuation, not a fresh entry into the world.
If the series is new to you, begin with book one; our Fourth Wing audiobook guide helps you choose its recording. If you finished Iron Flame some time ago, you may need a memory refresh more than another product comparison.
Try writing this four-line card from your own memory before opening Onyx Storm:
- Where I left Violet: the situation at the end of the previous book.
- People I need to remember: a few names and their relationships, not a complete cast list.
- Rules I am sure about: what you currently understand about the world and its magic.
- Questions still open: things you expect the next book to address, clearly marked as questions.
Then revisit only the relevant places in your own Iron Flame copy. If you use a recap, choose one explicitly limited to that book; an updated series wiki may reveal Onyx Storm events in a character's first sentence. You do not need to memorize every proper noun before beginning.
The complete narrated recording and the two-part adaptation
The standard English Google Play audiobook is labeled unabridged, runs 23 hours 52 minutes, and credits Rebecca Soler, Teddy Hamilton, Justis Bolding, and Jasmin Walker. Multiple narrator credits do not by themselves make a recording the GraphicAudio dramatization.
GraphicAudio publishes a separate adaptation with a cast, music, and sound effects. Both parts are released. Its own product pages identify them as follows:
| Product | What you are getting | Publisher's listed length |
|---|---|---|
| Standard unabridged recording | The complete narrated Onyx Storm | 23 hours 52 minutes |
| GraphicAudio Part 1 of 2 | The first part of the dramatized adaptation; ISBN 9798890559753 | Approximately 10 hours |
| GraphicAudio Part 2 of 2 | The concluding part of that adaptation; ISBN 9798890559777 | Approximately 10 hours |
The two GraphicAudio lengths are approximate publisher figures. Do not use them to infer an exact chapter split or an exact twenty-hour total. A dramatized adaptation and an unabridged narration are different presentations, so their timestamps are not interchangeable.
For a straightforward choice, sample the standard recording if you want continuous narrated prose. Sample GraphicAudio if you want an audio-drama presentation. Listen to the actual version you plan to buy; a clip credited to Rebecca Soler will not tell you how a different cast sounds.
Before paying for a part or bundle
Check title, production, and coverage on the checkout listing. “Empyrean 3” identifies the novel; “1 of 2” identifies a portion of the adaptation. A series bundle and a two-part book bundle may contain very different things.
If you already own Part 1, look for the matching Part 2 before buying another full-book package. If you only own Fourth Wing or Iron Flame, a similarly designed cover does not mean Onyx Storm is included in your purchase. Compare the titles actually listed inside the bundle.
If you want a downloadable audio file, review the format options on the GraphicAudio product page. MP3 or M4B audio is not an EPUB or PDF of the text. Some purchase options include downloads or offer them separately; check your selected option and region instead of assuming that app access includes every file format.
For a loan, the Tennessee READS OverDrive record is an example of the standard recording in a library catalog. Search your own library for the desired version. A hold on the standard audiobook will not necessarily provide either GraphicAudio part.
Can you download an Onyx Storm EPUB or PDF?
Kobo's US English ebook lists ISBN 9781649376947, EPUB 3, and Adobe DRM. It is a legitimate purchase, but the protection means it cannot be imported directly into CastReader's EPUB reader. We have not verified an official free full-text PDF or EPUB of Onyx Storm.
A retailer preview helps you test the writing; it is not the complete book. Likewise, a complete audiobook purchase does not automatically include the ebook. Choose the format you will actually use before buying both.
If you have a separately obtained, legitimate DRM-free EPUB, you can open a compatible file in the CastReader EPUB reader. It parses the file locally in your browser. Device voices are free without a CastReader account; AI voices require sign-in and have plan limits, and cloud narration processes the reading text remotely. CastReader does not provide the novel, remove DRM, or recreate either professional production.
Use a chapter landmark when changing formats
When you pause, record the book title, production, part if applicable, and chapter or scene landmark. Add a timestamp only for returning to that same recording. Moving to another version at the same number of hours can put you somewhere else in the story.
If you are returning after a break, listen to the short restart note you wrote. Keep any new Onyx Storm discoveries in a separate note with your current chapter at the top, so you can share the earlier recap with a friend without sharing spoilers.
The CastReader download guide explains the available web, browser, and mobile routes. Local EPUB import uses the web reader or supported mobile apps, not the browser extensions. For another series where book numbers and dramatized parts are easy to confuse, see the ACOTAR audio and reading-order guide.
