WORKED EXAMPLES

Compare the details that change what a sentence means

A meeting and a rainy-day plan

Original

明日の朝9時に駅の前で会いましょう。雨が降ったら、近くのカフェで待っています。

Sample audio · CastReader Alpha

Saved translation

Let’s meet in front of the station at 9 a.m. tomorrow. If it rains, I’ll be waiting at a nearby café.

Sample audio · CastReader Heart

What to check in the result

Keep 9 a.m. tomorrow and the place in front of the station. The café plan applies only if it rains. Japanese omits the waiting subject; “I” is a plausible reading in this invitation, not an explicitly written pronoun.

Try “A meeting and a rainy-day plan” in the example selector above

A train that skips your destination

Original

この電車は京都には止まりません。京都へお越しの方は、次の駅で普通列車にお乗り換えください。

Saved translation

This train does not stop at Kyoto. If you are going to Kyoto, please transfer to a local train at the next station.

What to check in the result

The train does not stop at Kyoto. The instruction is to change at the next station, not at Kyoto, and to take a local train. Check the negation and the transfer point together.

Give an omitted subject some context

Japanese often leaves the subject unstated. A sentence such as 待っています can mean “I’m waiting” or “I’ll be waiting,” depending on context. Include the surrounding sentence when who or when matters.

Check names before listening

Kanji names may have more than one reading. A device voice and a translation can both choose the wrong pronunciation. Keep the original spelling visible and check the person’s own reading when it matters.

Hear the difference in phrasing

The example proposes meeting at a station and gives a plan if it rains. Check that both the meeting place and the condition survive translation, then compare the two voices at 0.75× or 1×.
