WORKED EXAMPLES

Compare the details that change what a sentence means

Opening hours in two time formats

Original

Le musée ouvre à 9 heures, mais il est fermé le lundi. Vous devez entrer avant 16 heures.

Saved translation

The museum opens at 9 a.m., but it is closed on Mondays. You must enter before 4 p.m.

What to check in the result

9 heures is interpreted as 9 a.m. in this museum-hours context; the source does not explicitly say “du matin.” 16 heures becomes 4 p.m. Keep the Monday closure and distinguish entry time from closing time.

A digital ticket for a group

Original

Vous n’avez pas besoin d’imprimer votre billet. Présentez le code QR à l’entrée, même si vous avez réservé pour plusieurs personnes.

Saved translation

You do not need to print your ticket. Present the QR code at the entrance, even if you have booked for several people.

What to check in the result

Printing is unnecessary; showing the QR code is still required. The same instruction applies to a booking for several people. The passage does not specify whether each person has a separate code.

Read the French source

Retain accents, apostrophes and negation. In informal writing ne may be omitted; use the complete sentence to check whether an action is negated.

Review the English result

Check articles, singular/plural forms and added pronouns. English may need an explicit subject that was only implied in the original.

Listen in English

Listen for sentence stress and contractions. A slower voice can help separate “I’ll”, “I’d” and “I’ve”, but pronunciation alone does not establish meaning.

Before you begin

How do I translate French to English and hear it?

This page starts with French as the source and English as the target. Paste text or try the example, then translate. Press Read translation after the result appears. Translation and playback are separate actions.

Why is English reading unavailable on my device?

Reading uses voices supplied by your device. Without a matching English voice exposed to the browser, the reading button is disabled. Translation and copying remain available. You may need to reopen the page after installing a voice.

Can I translate English back into French?

After translating, swap to use the English result as the new original, or open the reverse-direction page. Back-translation helps compare wording but does not prove the first translation is correct.
